Wisdom on How Your Scout Can Have a Great Summer Camp Experience
Scouts can get snacks at the Trading Post. They’ll eat plenty of food in the cafeteria too. They don’t need large boxes of candy and munchies shipped to
them from you. They shouldn’t bring food to camp either.
Best not to give your son a 30 minute briefing on all the bad things that might happen at camp. Most bad things won’t happen but having the discussion can put them on edge thinking what might happen.
Don’t tell them all the fun things going on at home that they’ll miss while at camp.
If you choose to visit at parent’s night on Wednesday, don’t let your scout go home with you if he asks. Let him finish camp to complete his experience (and his merit badges). Some parents realize it’s better for their scout if they don’t come out to camp. If you decide not to come, let him know so he understands. (You could simply say it’s too far…)
Merit Badges
Go to the public library or Scout Store to get a merit badge pamphlets to reference. Click on this link to download the merit badge worksheets and print it. Some of the merit badges require pre-work. For example, the pre-work for Wilderness Survival is #5: bring a personal survival kit to camp. Click on this link for 2014 pre-requisites. Craft merit badges (Leather, Woodcarving, etc.) require scouts to purchase kits (< $10) from the Trading Post which is supplied with BSA camping items, books, shirts and other Scout merchandise. It is also stocked with traditional beverages and snack items, personal hygiene and convenience store items.
DO’s
Be positive about camp telling your scout how much fun they’ll have.
Include the following in your scout’s personal gear for summer camp:
Pack List
Click on the above link for our complete packing list but particularly notice the following items:
Rain poncho (that will last more than one day or two)
Mosquito/Deer fly protection that contains some amount of Deet (& tell them to use it!) – ie. Deep Woods
Sun protection (SPF 30 or whatever works for him)
Mess kit, utensils, and cup – camp cafeteria expects boys to provide own dishes to eat & wash each meal.
Day pack (school bag) useful especially if riding a bike.
Wide brim hat (keeps Deer flies away)
Compass (needed for new scouts)
For swimming merit badge, bring tennis shoes, long pants, belt, long sleeve shirt for clothing inflation test
DON’TS
